Ujray Hoye logon – Mohsin Naqvi
Mohsin Naqvi is not with us anymore but still alive in the hearts of countless fans. Mohsin’s poetry is a mixture of love and hate. Love for the beloved ones and hatred for the enemies of beauty, love, compassion, sublimity and the dignity of man. The thing that I like most about is his search for democratic values.
My personal favorite one’s from this Ghazal are the first & the last sher.
Article – CONTRIBUTION OF MUSLIM POETS TOWARDS CURRENT INDIAN PHILOSOPHY
A nice article that try to erase(among other thing) the misconception about Urdu Poetry that it is about gul-o-bulbul, shama-parwana, women and wine and explains it with examples from Muslim Poets of the subcontinent (Mostly from Ghalib & Iqbal) are provided. The concepts given by these poet are compared with that of the Traditional hindi Verdant & Bakhti. Except from the article
…..
Though it is not adequately explored and appreciated, Urdu poetry by Muslim poets has given us elixir of Bhakti Rasa. Ghalib says ‘Jaan di di huyi usiki thhi / Haq to hai hai ki haq adaa na hua’ (Allah gives life and He also takes it away, but the regret is that a person does not perform the sacrosanct duties assigned to him during his life-time). Ghalib’s disciple Altaf Hussain Hali goes a step further. He says ‘bande se magar hoga haq kyonkar ada tera’ (It is not possible for human beings to repay the innumerable bounties conferred on them by God. So they should not even claim to do that and should always remain indebted to Him). This is the same as a bhajan – Mera is mein kuchh naahi, jo kuchh hai so tor, tera tujhko saumpte kya laagat hai mor (All is yours / what do I lose if I give it back to you)
………
At the end a brief explanation Ishq e Haqeeqi & Ishq e Majazi with examples from different Sufi Poet of subcontinent.
Majeed Amjad’s “Shayar”
Definitely a Poet less remembered. Known as the father of Jadeed Nazm and even a Poet like Muneer Niazi rated him a the best Poet from Pakistan. Its good to see that he is getting much more recognition in urdu circles and recently they had a Program on PTV ‘Majeed Amjad ke yaad mein’. I definitely had a personal attachment with Majeed Amjad and I would like that the great poet gets more recognition & fame.
Ghazal by Parveen Shakir – Mushkil hai ke abb shehr mein
A classic from the arguably the greatest poetess from Pakistan. Every Sher is beautiful and quotable. My personal favorite from this Ghazal is the ‘Iss baar jo aindhan ke liye’. I remember that from my childhood days when we used to watch PTV a lot and they started a Great Sher segment (Just like the segment for Allama Iqbal & Quaid e Azam quotes) and they show it with a message of ‘Love the environment & Save Green Heritage’.
